Sustainable

Thatching: A Sustainable Roofing Option

Thatching is a time tested method that offers numerous environmental benefits. It is arguably the most sustainable and eco-friendly roofing method. By using natural materials and traditional techniques, thatched roofs provide excellent insulation, reduce energy consumption, and promote biodiversity. Thatch is fast growing and harvested annually, absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and sequestering it in the ground as it grows. Thatch is kept in its natural form meaning that is fully biodegradable when it is done with.

FAQs

Have a question about thatched roofs? Take a look through some frequently asked questions.

How long should my roof last?

Typically a straw thatched roof should last 25-30+ years. This is all dependent on the architecture of the building, quality of material and quality of the workmanship.

How long should the ridge last?

A ridge should last 15 years and will need to be replaced at least once during every roofs life cycle.

How long does it take to thatch a roof?

This depends on the size and intricacy of your home, no thatch is done fast, its labour intensive and will take time to complete.

How can I preserve my roof?

Keep an eye out for obvious signs of wear and report this to a thatcher. Have a thatcher come and inspect the roof. Cut back overhanging trees and any plants growing up into the thatch. Make sure maintenance is kept up to date.

Does a thatched roof leak?

If not kept properly maintained, like any roof, a thatched roof will eventually leak. A well maintained or recently thatched roof is just as proficient at shedding water as other roofing methods.

Is a thatched roof a good insulator?

A thatched roof is a brilliant insulator, far better than any other conventional roof covering, reducing the need for additional insulative materials. A single 12 inch application of thatch meets industry insulation standard, and many wheat straw roofs have multiple layers. They are also highly soundproof.

Is a thatched roof expensive?

Thatched roofs require a lot of materials and labour to install so they do come at a higher price, however highly insulative properties can cut heating costs and the kerb appeal can add value to the property. Thatched roofs are priced per roofers sq (100sqft).
